A self-contained local-AI, knowledge, comms, and power stack for a house in Hanover, NH. Everything runs with no internet, no grid, no cloud. Based on Martin Varsavsky's spec.

2026 pricing reality: the original "$5K tier" predates the AI-driven RAM/NAND crisis. DDR5 is roughly 4x its Sept-2025 price; SSDs are ~6.5x year-ago enterprise levels and rose another 5% in July alone. Buy sooner rather than later. GMKtec's own site is running a "price increase coming soon" banner.

Ordered by price risk: memory and storage are climbing monthly, so the RAM-heavy box and the SSDs come first. Downloads cost nothing but take days on home bandwidth, so start them early.

Best price-per-GB of any 395/128GB box shipping today. The 128GB of unified memory is the whole point: it runs gpt-oss-120b locally via LM Studio or llama.cpp at roughly 30-40 tok/s (typical for Strix Halo class). US plug option, no import fees, 1-year warranty.

Alternates
  • Framework Desktop (395 / 128GB): mainboard now $3,149 (was $1,999 at Feb-2025 launch), full DIY system ~$3,4xx. Best build quality, best firmware support, most repairable. Worth the premium if reliability beats budget.
  • HP Z2 Mini G1a (Max+ PRO 395 / 128GB): street ~$2,299-3,039 depending on config. Tested running gpt-oss-120b by PCMag and StorageReview. Enterprise warranty, but HP configurator list prices run $4,800+.
  • Beelink GTR9 Pro (395 / 128GB, dual 10GbE): ~$1,985 but effectively China-only preorder with no reliable US channel. Skip for now.
EVO-X2 known issues.
  • Do not casually update the BIOS. Multiple reports of bricked units from official updates (r/GMKtec). If it works, leave the firmware alone.
  • USB4 DisplayPort alt-mode only works after the OS loads. Keep an HDMI cable around for BIOS access.
  • Set GPU memory allocation in the BIOS (newer firmware), not the AMD driver. Allocate ~96GB to the iGPU for 120B models.
  • Fans are loud under sustained load; BIOS fan control is limited to Quiet/Balanced/Performance modes.
  • If these caveats bother you, the Framework is the "it just works" option for about $1,400 more.

2. Two backup mini PCs

32GB unified-style memory with a Radeon 890M iGPU. Comfortably runs Gemma-3 12B or Mistral-Nemo 12B quantized, in the 8-11 tok/s class. Two boxes means one can fail, get fried, or live at a second location.

Alternates (cheaper, or Apple)
  • Beelink SER9 Pro (Ryzen 7 H255, 32GB/1TB): seen as low as ~$509-599 on sale at Beelink and Newegg. Two for ~$1,100. The budget play, and it drops the kit total to ~$6,950.
  • Mac mini M4 (16GB $799, 24GB config ~$999): Apple raised the entry price from $599 and capped standard M4 at 24GB during the RAM shortage. 24GB runs 12B Q4 fine, with superb efficiency and tiny idle power (good on battery).
  • Minisforum UM890 Pro (8845HS, 32-64GB): proven 12B performance.

1050MB/s read/write, IP55 water and dust resistant, and by far the best 4TB dollars-per-GB right now. Buy these NOW: SSD prices are forecast to keep rising through 2026 into 2027.

Alternates (all much pricier due to the NAND crunch)
  • Samsung T7 Shield 4TB: ~$939 at Amazon, $1,145 Samsung direct. Was ~$250 in 2025. Skip unless the X9 Pro sells out.
  • Samsung 990 Pro 4TB NVMe (internal, plus a $30 USB4 enclosure): ~$690-1,000 depending on retailer. Faster, but not worth 2026 prices for archive duty.

The entire English Wikipedia with images, a full medical encyclopedia, every English Project Gutenberg book, and offline maps of the region. Everything fits on ONE 4TB SSD, leaving the other two for models and mirrors.

The four downloads
  • Wikipedia, full English with images: wikipedia_en_all_maxi ZIM, 115GB, from download.kiwix.org/zim/wikipedia (browse at library.kiwix.org).
  • WikiMed medical encyclopedia: wikipedia_en_medicine_maxi ZIM, ~2GB, same Kiwix repo.
  • Project Gutenberg, all English books: gutenberg_en_all ZIM, ~206GB (2025-11 build, grew from 86GB in 2023), from download.kiwix.org/zim/gutenberg.
  • OpenStreetMap: the full planet is ~88GB at planet.openstreetmap.org, but a regional US-Northeast extract from Geofabrik is a few GB and far more practical for offline routing via Organic Maps or OsmAnd.
Pull everything now. Downloads are free while bandwidth is cheap. Refresh quarterly; the Wikipedia ZIM updates roughly monthly.

5. Solar + battery

Biggest battery per dollar of the three contenders, with 120V/240V output and expandable capacity. The station alone has been $1,799 on sale (refurb $1,400 via 9to5toys on 8/11). Add the second 400W panel to reach an 800W array.

Alternates
  • EcoFlow Delta Pro (3.6kWh) + 400W panel: $2,399. Delta Pro 3 + 400W from $3,099.
  • Bluetti AC300 + B300K (3.07kWh modular) + PV350 panel: ~$2,299. Modular batteries are nice (swap and expand); the inverter is separate from the battery. This bundle is the trim that gets the whole kit to ~$6,200.
NH winter caveat.
  • LiFePO4 cannot charge below 32°F / 0°C (permanent lithium-plating damage). All three units block or self-heat when cold, but self-heating burns stored energy. Keep the battery indoors, in a basement or garage above freezing, and run panel extension cables outside.
  • Hanover January sun is ~2-3 peak hours per day and panels get snow-covered. Expect an 800W array to yield only ~1.5-2kWh/day midwinter.
  • Mount panels steep, 60° or more, to shed snow.

Four RAK WisBlock Meshtastic Starter Kits (RAK4631, US915, $34.97 each at Rokland): lowest power draw of anything available (nRF52840, weeks on battery), best for fixed nodes at the house, barn, and treeline repeater. Two Seeed SenseCAP T1000-E card trackers ($39.90 each): credit-card size, GPS, sealed, ready to go, the best pocket node. Plus a Rokland 10dBi outdoor omni 915MHz antenna ($49.97) for the home base.

  • Heltec V3 complete node with case and battery: from $59.99 at MakerNova (bare boards ~$25-30). Cheapest option with a screen; ESP32 is power-hungry, fine on wall power.
  • LILYGO T-Beam / T-Beam Supreme: $31-56. GPS included, classic choice, bulkier.
  • RAK WisMesh Pocket v2 (all-in-one handheld): from $84.97 at Rokland if you want zero assembly.
Wooded NH is hard on 915MHz. LoRa does not punch through dense forest and granite hills well. Real range in Hanover terrain is 0.5-2 miles node-to-node in woods, 10+ miles with line-of-sight elevation. Plan on the 10dBi antenna mounted high at the house and at least one solar repeater on a hilltop or ridgeline. Use the LongFast preset, and test before you rely on it.

Budget backups (2x SER9 Pro) bring it to ≈ $6,950. Trim to ≈ $6,200 with budget backups plus the Bluetti AC300/B300K + PV350 bundle ($2,299, 350W PV only).

Setup guide

Order of operations once the boxes arrive. Each step is self-contained; the drill at the end proves the whole stack works with the internet unplugged.

Main box: BIOS, memory split, first model

  • Connect a monitor over HDMI for initial setup. USB4 DisplayPort alt-mode only works after the OS loads, so HDMI is your only path into the BIOS.
  • In the BIOS, allocate ~96GB to the iGPU. Do this in the BIOS (newer firmware), not the AMD driver; the driver setting will not hold for 120B-class models.
  • Do not update the BIOS casually. There are multiple brick reports from official updates. If the box works, leave the firmware alone.
  • Install LM Studio (easiest) or llama.cpp (leanest), then pull the gpt-oss-120b GGUF. Expect roughly 30-40 tok/s.
  • Save the model file to one of the 4TB SSDs too, so you can reload it without internet.

Backup minis: 12B-class models

  • Install LM Studio or Ollama on each mini.
  • Pull Gemma-3 12B and Mistral-Nemo 12B in quantized form (Q4-class fits comfortably in 32GB). Expect the 8-11 tok/s class.
  • Verify each mini can answer questions with Wi-Fi off before you call it done.
  • Keep one mini boxed as a cold spare, or run it at a second location.

Archives: Kiwix, maps, SSD layout

  • Install Kiwix on every machine (free, all platforms).
  • Download from download.kiwix.org: wikipedia_en_all_maxi (115GB), wikipedia_en_medicine_maxi (~2GB), and gutenberg_en_all (~206GB). Start these first; they take days on home bandwidth.
  • For maps, grab the US-Northeast extract from Geofabrik and load it into Organic Maps or OsmAnd on phones and laptops. Skip the 88GB full planet unless you want it for completeness.
  • Suggested layout across the three 4TB SSDs: SSD-1 archives (all ZIMs + maps), SSD-2 models (every GGUF you use, plus installers for LM Studio, Ollama, and Kiwix), SSD-3 mirror (a copy of the other two).
  • Refresh quarterly. The Wikipedia ZIM updates roughly monthly; re-download while bandwidth is cheap and rotate the mirror.

Power: battery indoors, panels steep

  • The battery lives indoors above freezing (basement or heated garage). LiFePO4 cannot charge below 32°F, and self-heating modes burn the energy you are trying to store.
  • Run panel extension cables outside; only the panels and cabling brave the weather.
  • Mount panels at 60° or steeper so they shed snow.
  • Plan around ~1.5-2kWh/day midwinter in Hanover (2-3 peak sun hours, minus snow cover). That runs the main box for several hours of active use per day, or the minis nearly continuously.

Meshtastic: flash, antenna, repeater

  • Flash every node at flasher.meshtastic.org (Chrome, USB cable, two clicks).
  • Set region US (915MHz) and the LongFast preset on all nodes so they mesh out of the box.
  • Put the 10dBi omni as high as possible at the house (attic, gable, or mast) on one of the RAK fixed nodes.
  • Plan a solar repeater on a hilltop or ridgeline. In wooded, hilly Hanover terrain, realistic node-to-node range is 0.5-2 miles in forest; a single elevated repeater with line of sight can stretch the mesh past 10 miles.
  • The two T1000-E cards are the pocket nodes: pair them to phones over Bluetooth with the Meshtastic app.
  • Test before you rely on it. Walk the property and mark where messages stop getting through.

Faraday-adjacent hygiene

Keep installers, model files, and one full archive mirror on the SSD that stays disconnected. A drive that is not plugged in cannot be corrupted, encrypted, or fried. If you later add EMP-rated storage bags (see the $50K tier), the cold spare mini and the mirror SSD go in first.

Test day: the drill

Run this once a quarter, on a day nothing is wrong. A kit you have never tested is a box of expensive parts.

  • Unplug the internet at the router, and unplug the house-power connection to the kit.
  • Run all three boxes off the battery for at least an hour of real use.
  • Ask the main box a hard question in LM Studio and confirm sane tokens-per-second.
  • Query Wikipedia offline in Kiwix from a backup mini (look something up in WikiMed too).
  • Navigate somewhere in Organic Maps with cell data off.
  • Send a mesh message from a T1000-E in your pocket to the house node, from the far edge of the property.
  • Note the battery percentage at start and end, and write down the burn rate.
